“Who the fuck do you think you are?” I demanded, barging into Luca’s office after having brushed aside his secretary.
I didn’t give a fuck about her or their office decorum. Yasmina and I could have been killed by the henchmen who’d run us off the road. I’d been so screaming mad when they stuffed me in their car, I think they were all too happy to get rid of me at Luca’s building.
And now I was looking at his beautiful goddamn face, wearing a small smile that I wanted to smack into next week. I clenched my fists so hard my nails cut my palms. I hated him more than I’d ever hated anyone.
Deep breath, girl. Deep breath.
Without breaking his gaze, which was locked with mine, he waved a hand at the others in his office. “Would you gentlemen please excuse my friend Echo and me?”
They hustled out, but not before Leo winked at me.
Jerk.
“I’m not your goddamn friend, you asshole,” I spat when the last person was gone.
He considered what I’d said. “I can see why you’d say that.”
“Your fucking henchmen could have killed Yasmina and me.”
“But they didn’t. And here you are, safe. Again.”
“Fuck you, Luca. I’d be a lot safer if you’d leave me the hell alone.”
He got up and walked around his desk, looking so goddamn sexy, I hated him even more.
And there I was, wearing the shitty old clothes I’d owned pre-Luca, my hair a mess and not a stitch of makeup on my face.
His colleagues had probably thought me some sort of nasty little Vegas guttersnipe. But that was okay. Because—fuck them, too.
“You don’t understand what’s going on here,” he said.
“Oh, I understand. You think I’m your prisoner. You think you did me some big favor by making sure I didn’t get killed in the Loaded Dice shootout. Well, you didn’t. I’d rather you had shot me too, just like you did my boss and everyone else.”
It was almost imperceptible, but his face twitched. Before he could recover, I would swear a hint of sadness passed over his eyes.
“I never would have done that. I could never hurt you.”
I threw my arms up in the air. “What? You think keeping me a prisoner isn’t hurting me?” I wailed.
He was silent.
And there we had it. It hadn’t crossed his crime-addled mind that I didn’t want to be his fucking Rapunzel.
He took a step toward me and put his hands on my shoulders. Before I could shrug him off, I had a revelation.
But maybe it had crossed his mind.
And he just didn’t care.
“Listen to me, Echo,” he said in a quiet voice. “I want you to be happy—or as happy as you possibly can be. But I won’t beg you to stay. If you hate… this… so much, or hate me so much, I’ll let you walk. I won’t like it, but I’ll let you walk.”
Stunned, I felt a damn lump growing in my throat for the second time that day.
He’d listened.
Which was all I really wanted.
